Stadium pulse is a real thing.
So, it a little light trash talking between guys that understand the dynamics of the Iron Bowl.
Alabama freshman phenom Ryan Williams and former Auburn star and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton battled - with joysticks - on Nick Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium ahead of Saturday’s Alabama-Auburn game.
“My kids - I never thought I would be that person to really be like this - are fans,” Newton told Williams. “Genuine fans. What you have done has really been something that impacts the next generation. ... You’ll never be able to appreciate it until you get into my shoes.”
Williams, meanwhile, shared his first Iron Bowl was a Kick 6 as an Auburn fan. And, yes, he stormed the field.
Both shared unique perspectives on the Alabama-Auburn game. Newton has been a part of Georgia-Florida and Florida-Florida State, but, “those were rivalry games until I got to Auburn, and I saw it was different.”
The Alabama receiver said it was different growing up.
“Ain’t gonna lie,” Williams said. “Growing up in an Auburn household, it was always, ‘We have to beat Alabama. ... It’s bigger for me than some of the other guys.”
But back to the game.
“Not a lot of people can say they’ve been undefeated on the field,” Newton said before the game. “Subtle flex.”
Newton, who thought he was going to be in the game as a quarterback for Auburn, essentially rage quit at the end of the third quarter with Williams and Alabama leading Newton’s Tigers 42-14. The former Auburn quarterback threw at least four interceptions in the matchup.
“You went too fast through your progressions,” Williams teased the former NFL quarterback. “... You just skipped to No. 2. ... You went too fast, but that’s OK.”
Williams had his way with the home environment.
“There are three certainties in life, Williams said, “death, taxes and No. 2 gonna get in that box.”
To negate the stadium pulse, the two re-set the game and met on a neutral field.
Newton’s Auburn team kicked a 20-yard field goal with 3 second left to beat Williams’ Tide 32-30.
There were times that tried Newton’s patience, however.
“Why y’all doing this to me?” he screamed. “Y’all gotta stop doing this to me, bro. I’m just a humble servant that has been invested in EA Sports since the age of 8 years old. And y’all gonna do this to me. Why? I gave y’all everything.”
