The Chicago Bears seemingly drew a line in the sand with their efforts to get the most out of veteran offensive lineman Nate Davis.
Davis is in the second year of a three-year deal he signed with the Bears prior to the 2023 season but the team took a measure this past Sunday morning that they've previously been unwilling to take with the free-agent bust. For the first time since signing with the Bears, Davis was a healthy scratch for the team as he was among the inactive players for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
If there is one objection to have to Ryan Poles' tenure as the Bears' general manager, it's his ability to identify veteran offensive line talent. Davis' three-year deal is biggest piece of evidence for that. When Davis signed with the Bears, there was speculation out of Tennessee that the contract would not age well.
The reasons why Titans fans were excited to have Davis leave were for the very same reasons Bears fans have grown tired of his act. There appears to be a lack of motivation from Davis in terms of being on the field. While Davis had a loss in the family last year that resulted in his absence from Training Camp and most of the preseason, this season saw Matt Eberflus issue an ultimatum to the veteran.
With Davis being healthy inactive on Sunday, that likely will remain the case moving forward barring injury. Matt Pryor appears to be firmly in place as the Bears' starting right guard and Ryan Bates will be eligible to be activated off injured reserve when the team returns from their bye week.
The most likely outcome for Davis will likely be getting cut by the Bears after this season as he only carries a $2MM dead cap hit for 2025.
