Opinion: Taylor Ann Green Leaving Southern Charm Is a Good Thing

When Bravo stars move on from their respective franchises, it is usually for the best. So when Taylor Ann Green announced she would be leaving Southern Charm after five years, the decision made sense. Tay joined the cast as Shep Rose’s girlfriend and played the part of background friend well. She never did find her footing with the group of charmers and is now looking forward to her future away from reality TV.

Taylor Ann Green had no Southern Charm storyline

As a Southern Charm fan since day one, I don’t think Taylor made an everlasting impression on the franchise. She was a bible-loving Southern girl through and through, and sometimes her demeanor didn’t resonate with the rest of the cast. Taylor was nice enough, with most of us questioning what she ever saw in Shep. Perhaps her most interesting season was when she and Shep were clearly having problems. She dealt with Shep yelling at her over an egg toss game, and fans started to see the cracks in their foundation.

Season 10 of Southern Charm didn’t show a lot of Taylor. In fact, she was MIA for a good chunk of episodes, which was understandable after the loss of her brother. Viewers weren’t buying her relationship with Gaston Rojas, no matter how hard she tried to push it. Her lack of self-awareness didn’t make for good TV. And if fans are honest with themselves, she might have been a better fit for Southern Hospitality. When it comes to Taylor, I think she and her short story just ran its course.

Taylor Ann Green didn’t get along with the girls of Southern Charm

Taylor did herself no favors in Season 9 when she lied about her hookups with Austen Kroll. Olivia Flowers and Taylor were super close, so it didn’t make any sense why Taylor threw the friendship away for a chance to date Austen. Sadly, Taylor proved to the rest of the women on Southern Charm that she wasn’t the best friend. During a Season 9 confessional, she doubled down against Olivia, claiming, “I did nothing wrong. No one was dating, and were Austen and Olivia really ever together?” Her entire attitude was snarky and uncalled for. The lack of accountability left a bad taste in her former friend’s mouth.

Perhaps Season 10 was supposed to be her redemption arc, but no one was willing to give her the chance. Not that there are many JT Thomas fans here, but it wasn’t nice to watch her lead him on either. She played a game where she often used her perceived desirability to get what she wanted, and the ladies of Charleston saw right through it. Season 10 showed Taylor essentially on an island by herself as she fought with Salley Carson over Gaston. The fights were petty and once again showed she didn’t understand the crux of the argument.

Who could replace Taylor Ann Green on Southern Charm?

Taylor announced in an Instagram post that she would be stepping back from Southern Charm. She wrote, “Hi everyone! A bittersweet announcement, but after a lot of conversations and thought this past year, it is with a heavy but peaceful heart to announce that I will be stepping away from Southern Charm next year.” She added, “These past 5 years with NBC and Bravo have been some of the most crazy but exciting times of my life. I will forever be thankful to the network, production teams, bravo family, and all the fans for ultimately cheering me on to where I am today. A wild rollercoaster but an incredible one to say the least.”

Now that there is an opening, I can’t help but wonder who might be able to replace Taylor. In a dream scenario, I’d love to see Cameran Eubanks come back. Season 10 showed many of the ladies’ conversations left on the cutting room floor. And I imagine that with Cam back at the helm, we’d get more women-centric storylines and move away from the three Peter Pans. However, I imagine that Bravo might try adding some new blood since Molly O’Connell and Salley did so well. Let’s hope Molly has a friend as funny and engaging as she is because that would be perfect!
