Ex-Packers, Lions RB could solve Vikings short-yardage problems in 2025

The Minnesota Vikings have some work to do this offseason at running back. Currently, the team has Ty Chander and Zavier Scott on their roster, but neither of those should be considered a great option to handle a bulk of carries in 2025.

There are plenty of rumblings about the Vikings wanting to re-sign last season's starter Aaron Jones or possibly going after one of the top free agent running backs if they aren't able to bring Jones back for 2025.

Jamaal Williams

However, a recently released player who is very familiar with the NFC North could be a huge benefit to Minnesota's offense if they can convince him to join the Vikings.

Ex-Packers, Lions RB could solve Minnesota Vikings' short-yardage problems in 2025

Vikings fans are familiar with Jamaal Williams, who was released by the Saints on Tuesday. The 29-year-old running back was a powerhouse for the Packers and Lions as well as the Saints during his eight years in the league. Over that time, he has rushed for 32 touchdowns with 17 of those coming with Detroit during the 2022 season.

Williams gained notoriety around the league for being a short-yardage and goal line specialist. 25 of his 32 rushing touchdowns have come from within five yards of the goal line, showcasing his ability to finish drives and put points on the board.

Aaron Jones was a teammate of Williams in Green Bay. Recreating that dynamic duo in the backfield could be a great combination to keep their running backs fresh while optimizing their chances at a first down or touchdown.

Jamaal Williams is also one of the most charismatic players in the league. In interviews, he has declared his love for anime, Pokémon, cats, and more to help connect him with fans and make him relatable to people around the world.

Williams was on a three-year deal worth $12 million with the New Orleans Saints. Averaging $4 million per season isn't bad for a running back that would fill a huge need and play a big role in Minnesota's offense in 2025.

Filling needs at running back by re-signing players or using salary cap space to bring an established rusher in would allow the Minnesota Vikings to use their picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on other positions of need or upgrade at positions that struggled mightily last season and desperately need to be re-evaluated.
