Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay understood why head coach Nick Sirianni clapped back at the fans during the game against the Cleveland Browns. On The Edge with Micah Parsons, Darius Slay reacted to the the exchange as the game was ending.
“Coach just got back in the win column. He was just excited,” Slay told Parsons. “He’s just happy to get back in the win column. We get boos just like everyone else gets boos at stadiums. Nick did the best way he could. He likes to show his personality a little bit. I saw that he apologized to the fans which he should because these fans love him to death. We do appreciate him as a coach. Emotions get involved, I just want people to know that. We are human, that’s it. We human, and that’s what makes it difficult out here.”
As Slay mentioned, Sirianni was happy to see his team earn a 20-16 victory over the Browns to improve to 3-2. The first four weeks of the season have been up-and-down for Philadelphia as the team beat the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, lost to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2, earned a victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 3 and fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4.
Nick Sirianni issues apology to Eagles fans for heated exchange
“I was trying to bring energy and enthusiasm yesterday, and I’m sorry and disappointed at how my energy was directed at the end of the game,” Sirianni said during his videoconference with reporters Monday, per ESPN. “My energy should be all-in on coaching, motivating and celebrating with our guys. And I’ve got to have better wisdom and discernment of when to use that energy and that wasn’t the time.”
Sirianni and the Eagles have faced a lot of scrutiny since last year. During the 2023, season, Philadelphia got off to a 10-1 start before finishing the year 1-6. And while the Eagles are 3-2 now, the wins haven’t satisfied Eagles fans since the margins of victory have been five points or fewer.
After the game on Sunday, Sirianni was asked about the boos the team received at their home stadium. “We thrive off the crowd when they cheer for us. That’s all I’ll say,” Sirianni said Sunday. “We hear them when they boo. We don’t necessarily like it. I don’t think that’s productive for anybody. But when they cheer for us and when we’ve got them rolling, we love it.”
