BREAKING: Romeo Doubs Is Taking the Right Approach Entering His Contract Year

Many athletes find the lack of financial security that comes with entering a contract year without a new deal unnerving.

However, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs is doing everything right in that situation.

Doubs surprised many people last year when the Packers suspended him for a game against the Los Angeles Rams for conduct detrimental to the team after skipping out on practices without notifying anyone. Reports surfaced that Doubs was upset with his role and decided to play hooky.

Entering the final year of his rookie deal with no assurance he’ll be back in Green Bay for the years to come could’ve steered Doubs back down a slippery slope of frustration.

However, have you seen the clips emerging already from this offseason?

Doubs looks as carefree as ever since the Packers drafted him in 2022.

He’s helping the rookie wide receivers, praising another in Matthew Golden, and scootering around the facilities like a man with no pressure on his shoulders to earn a hefty payday within the next year.

As for last year with the early-season hiccup?

Speaking with reporters, Doubs is ready to put it behind him.

I’m going to be completely honest with you, man, is there some regret behind that? There is, but obviously what’s in the past stays in the past, and I’m here with you all just answering these questions to the best of my ability.

He sounds like a player who’s found his happy place and is content with and confident in his trajectory.

The big question in the wide receiver room entering last season was who would emerge as Jordan Love’s No. 1 option in the passing game. By the time January rolled around, that question remained unanswered, which almost certainly factored into their selection of Golden in the first round of this year’s draft. Out of the whole group, though, there’s a strong case to be made that Doubs was the most reliable WR on the field.

Doubs had eight games with at least eight targets. Unlike Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, who had nine drops apiece, that wasn’t an issue for No. 87.

Doubs doesn’t possess Christian Watson’s speed or Reed’s versatility, but he offered quarterback Jordan Love an incredibly reliable target when the offense was in a pinch.

As for this offseason, Doubs has stood out to head coach Matt LaFleur.

“He looks great out there,” LaFleur said after Tuesday’s OTA practice. “I don’t know if you guys can tell a difference in his physique, he does look like a specimen out there. But he does, he does a great job.”

In a contract year where his mind could wander towards his future, Doubs has said all the right things during OTAs.

My goal going into this year is to be a winner. Obviously to be a player within this offense and ultimately to help out two [new] receivers that are here learning the system.

It’s the perfect approach.

There will be a ton of competition in the wide receiver room all summer, which will carry into the regular season. Because of the sheer numbers in the room, there will be a couple of pretty solid players on the chopping block.

That competition can bring out the best or the worst in each individual. Doubs’ willingness to show the rookies the ropes is genuine. It could go a long way in helping the Packers succeed in 2025 and leapfrog Doubs into discussions for an extension to remain in Green Bay down the road.

Doubs seems to be taking the water-off-a-duck’s-back approach for a wide receiver who is playing for a lot in 2025. It’s encouraging to see.

However, the real test for the group will come as the season takes shape.

What if Golden does chew up a ton of targets early on and becomes a focal point in LaFleur’s system immediately? How do Doubs, Reed, and Wicks respond to that?

What if Reed puts it all together like he did during the first four weeks of 2024 and becomes the guy on the offense? How do the others handle a lack of consistent looks?

If any of those thoughts become reality, those questions will eventually have answers. Nothing in how Doubs is carrying himself this offseason suggests it will be a problem. There’s also the possibility that Doubs will become the top threat in the passing game.

Doubs is entering a tricky part of his career. He’ll be entering the season in the last year of his rookie deal and is part of a wide receiver room with many mouths to feed. That alone could stir up a hell of a lot of anxiety for someone in Doubs’ shoes.

Instead, he’s carrying himself this offseason like a true veteran who knows he’ll rise to the occasion while lifting those around him. He’s already seemed more energized talking to reporters this year than in the last couple of seasons.

The Packers must be giddy about what the season could look like for No. 87.
