Are Ravens a Free-Agent Fit for Keenan Allen?

In 2024, the Baltimore Ravens saw the newest optimized version of quarterback Lamar Jackson, demonstrating development into the elite tier of passers to keep him head and shoulders above so many other passers.

The passing offense was first in expected points added per dropback, using the gains from the rushing attack to further open up windows Jackson’s legs tend to create.

Of course, it wasn’t enough in January. Tight end Mark Andrews’ gaffes and a handful of key errors destined Baltimore to another year of playoff misery, tasking the team to get back and remain potent in a conference filled with elite quarterbacks.

Jackson must continue to win through the air, and that requires further investment into the passing offense.

Subsequently, the Ravens are a top competitor to sign veteran receiver Kennan Allen in free agency.

The esteemed slot receiver ranked 49th in ESPN’s free agency primer.

“Allen caught 70 passes in Chicago, leading to seven touchdown receptions,” Matt Bowen wrote. “He isn't as dynamic of a mover at this late stage of his career, but the veteran receiver is a crafty route runner who can make himself available to the quarterback. He fits as a chain-moving No. 3 receiver, which is the role he played for the Bears this season.”

At a depressed cost – he’s entering his age-33 season after all – Allen makes a good amount of sense for Baltimore. Flowers has inside-out versatility but is often on the boundary, and Rashod Bateman joins him on the perimeter. Nelson Agholor is replaceable in the slot, and Allen is a quarterback-friendly target who can help on key passing downs when the Ravens play off of their dominant ground game.

"The Ravens could have a massive need at offensive tackle if Ronnie Stanley leaves; but if Baltimore retains the 30-year-old, the team will have to go with less expensive options to address other needs," Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport wrote. "Lamar Jackson was great as a passer last year, but he could benefit from improved pass-catchers behind Zay Flowers.

"Allen will be 33 when the season starts and had modest numbers last year in Chicago, but he topped 100 catches and 1,200 yards with the Los Angeles Chargers as recently as 2023."

Allen may not see a ton of playing time in Baltimore’s offense. Tight ends Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews both win from the slot, and the Ravens don’t hesitate to drop into 12 personnel. But Allen’s health concerns might make that another reason to ring chase in Charm City.

In Baltimore, Allen can play a minor role on a team with major aspirations, and won’t be asked to carry the load of the passing offense. Instead, as a complementary piece, there’s reason to believe he’d find success in the twilight of his career.
