What are the golf handicaps for Kalen DeBoer, Hugh Freeze, other SEC coaches?

It’s May, which for some SEC football coaches means it’s charity golf season. Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Auburn’s Hugh Freeze are no exceptions, as both are scheduled to play in Wednesday’s celebrity pro-am event ahead of the Regions Tradition at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham.

Both DeBoer and Freeze have listed handicaps on the USGA’s Golf Handicap Information Network database, along with several other coaches from the SEC and beyond. Ahead of Wednesday’s event, here’s a look at where their golf games currently stand, at least according to their publicly posted scores and handicaps.

Regions Tradition pro-am participants

Kalen DeBoer

DeBoer has said that while he enjoys playing golf, he hardly has any time to get onto the course. He enters Wednesday’s event as a 19.6 handicap, well off his all-time low 17.4.

Alabama’s head coach, a member at Northriver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, reported two rounds in April, one 95, along with a 99 at his home course. He played once in March, putting up a 97, along with a 95 in February.

Hugh Freeze

While his swing looks like it could single-handedly keep the Lee County chiropractic industry alive, Freeze is, by all accounts, one of the best golfers in the SEC coaching community. The GHIN lists him as a member of both Moore’s Mill Golf Club and the Auburn University Club, and he currently carries a 5.9 handicap.

Auburn’s head coach has a full slate of 20 scores listed for 2025 and could have played even more. His low score on the GHIN is a 75, which he shot in April.

Smart, a member of Athens Country Club, enters this year’s pro-am as a 12.6 handicap. The Georgia head coach’s all-time low is a 12.4.

The former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator hasn’t posted a score since February of 2024, when he put up a 97 at his home course. He last reported breaking in May of 2022.

Nick Saban

Since his retirement as Alabama’s coach in January of 2024, Saban has been spending plenty of time at his home in Jupiter, Fl., where he has presumably seen some of the area’s many golf courses. However, Saban has not posted a score since February of 2023.

Saban’s last posted score was an 86, which is listed as being from a competition. His handicap is listed as a 10.6.

Trent Dilfer

Dilfer is, of course, not an SEC coach, but he is planning to play in Wednesday’s celebrity pro-am. UAB’s head coach is known as an extremely solid amateur golfer, and his handicap bears that out.

Dilfer carries a 1.6 currently and has already played five times in May. His most recent score was a 71 at his home course, presumably Vestavia Country Club, though he has multiple handicap hosts.

Other SEC football coaches

Mark Stoops

Though he’s not participating in Wednesday’s event, Stoops has found time to post six 18-hole scores in 2025. He’s listed at a 17.1 handicap, and his lowest posted score is an 84 from July.

Kentucky’s head coach has broken 90 one time this year, an 89 in April.

Shane Beamer

South Carolina’s head coach, who hosts a golf tournament for media members in Columbia, is currently a 10.4 handicap. That’s well off his best mark, which was a 7.2.

Beamer has played four times so far in May, most recently carding an 86. His lowest posted score is an 83 from July.
