The Dallas Cowboys made several depth picks in last weekend's NFL Draft, addressing areas of need with calculated picks throughout the three-day event.
The Cowboys did not select a quarterback, but that was likely expected after trading for Joe Milton and parting ways with Trey Lance.
Dallas is excited about getting quarterback Dak Prescott back after his quad injury last season, but they're set to take a look at another quarterback this weekend.
ESPN's Todd Archer says that the Cowboys will have former Houston quarterback Donovan Smith at rookie minicamp, where he will try out for the team.
“The two practices open to the media on Friday, Saturday will only be about an hour each to serve as introduction for the rookies," Archer said on X after noting that Smith would be with the team on a tryout basis.
Smith spent his first three college seasons at Texas Tech before transferring to Houston for the 2023 season. Last year, the quarterback played in nine games. He completed 65% of his passes for 867 yards, throwing for four touchdowns and eight interceptions.
He's shown an ability to run the ball as well, which fits in with what the Cowboys seem to be trying to do at quarterback. Prescott has been one of the more mobile quarterbacks in the NFL since joining the league, and has the sixth-most rushing touchdowns among quarterbacks since he entered in 2016.
Milton's athleticism is also well-regarded, and the Cowboys have shown an ability to use players like Trey Lance last season in creative ways. We'll see what they have in store for players like Prescott and Milton next season, and if Smith will be joining them on the final roster.
Dallas has been able to find diamonds in the rough outside of the NFL Draft, including former USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin, who has become a two-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro. Turpin has been able to become one of the best returners in the league, and the Cowboys will hope that they can get similar production from Smith.
Rookie minicamps around the league are set to begin soon, giving fans their first looks at the new class of rookies in their new uniforms.
