Surprising Candidate Named As Bills' Biggest Free Agency Need

The Buffalo Bills have a host of free agents, and general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott must decide who stays and who goes.

Surprising Candidate Named As Bills' Biggest Free Agency Need

Both sides of the ball have key players needing their futures sorted, but working out where to start is a daunting task.

The likes of Amari Cooper, Mack Hollins, Rasul Douglas, and Damar Hamlin loom as the key ones, but where should the Bills' free agency retaining project start?

For CBS Sports, it starts in a rather unexpected place.

"RB Ty Johnson: Veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas is the bigger name, but this year's free agent crop is full of proven cover men," CBS Sports writes. "Johnson is an underrated change-of-pace counterpart to James Cook."

Johnson is an interesting choice, and we bet that this is likely due to the James Cook contract situation with Ty being a nice change up to James last season.

Ty was used sparingly last season, totaling just 213 yards and a touchdown, but he was a serious option as a receiver, with 284 yards and three touchdowns.

So, while he was used here and there, is he really the most pressing free agent to be signed? The Bills have Ray Davis, who showed what he can do in his rookie season, but maybe they aren't completely sold on him just yet.

Johnson has been a bit-part player for most of his career, but his speed and burst out of the backfield make him a dangerous threat in both the run and passing game.

Whether or not Johnson is the Bills' most pressing free agent decision is in the eye of the beholder, but it is clear what he means to the offense, and perhaps that is enough to warrant a new contract.
