The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of a very important offseason that will likely have a huge impact on the direction of the franchise over the next several years. Unfortunately, Steeler Nation feels like it has been hearing that already for some time now, and the future is still unclear.
The first decision that everyone wants answers on is who will be the Steelers' quarterback in 2025, and hopefully beyond. While everyone has their opinion on whether or not the team should look to run it back with one of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields (or whether a rookie should be brought in), it may not be a decision completely up to the Steelers.
Pete Carroll was announced recently as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, which made it easy for people to connect some dots pointing to a potential reunion with Wilson. Now, recently Wilson shot down this idea stating his preferred future for his career is to remain in Pittsburgh. Not everyone believes that isn't just some good PR by Wilson.
One of those people who think that Wilson shooting down the Raiders talk is just playing it smart, is none other than Ben Roethlisberger. On the most recent episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, he spoke on the Raiders and Wilson chatter.
"The whole Russell Wilson to the Raiders, because Pete Carroll is there," Roethlisberger began. "I know Russ shot it down, which is what he is supposed to do. But is that something that is a real option? Because I know that him and Pete Carroll supposedly had beef, which is why he left. Supposedly it has been fixed, is there something there?"
Wilson had some shining moments early in his run as the Steelers quarterback in 2024, but that didn't end the way anyone would have hoped. There is reportedly some bad blood between Wilson and current Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smtih as Smith removed Wilson's ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage late in the year. That is a move that would rub pretty much any veteran quarterback the wrong way, and could result in Wilson being willing to look past previous issues to reunite with a familiar face out West.
Regardless of whether or not the Steelers and Wilson have mutual interest in extending their relationship, there is no doubt that Wilson will likely explore the potential of going back out West and rejoining Carroll. It might be a split that would be best for both parties in the long run as the season ended in a way that will make running it back in 2025 not an ideal scenario in many people's eyes.
Steelers Could Look To Add Pair Of Teammates From NFC
There could be a complete twist to the Steelers' outlook on offense for the 2025 season with a couple players potentially on the move. Cooper Kupp posted recently that he was informed by the Los Angeles Rams that they would be looking to trade him this offseason, a move that he didn't appear to be a fan of based on his post about the news on social media. A team that desperately could use the addition of Kupp is the Steelers, and they appear to be one of the front runners as they were the first team mentioned recently when discussing possible destinations.
Kupp might not be alone, as there has been some speculation around the future of Matthew Stafford as well. It is unclear if the Rams plan on moving him, but with the team willing to move on from someone like Kupp who has spent his entire career with the team, anything is possible. The Steelers were also recently discussed as a team that shouldn't wait to make a call on Stafford, as they are one of a few teams that many consider being just a quarterback away.
