The unthinkable might be on the horizon for the Pittsburgh Penguins as rumours swirl around the possibility of trading Sidney Crosby at the 2025 NHL trade deadline.

While the idea has been lightly discussed in the past, few believed it could ever become a reality. However, with training camp approaching and Crosby still unsigned, speculation is growing that this scenario could unfold. After 19 seasons and an illustrious career with the Penguins, Crosby is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to wear the uniform. Yet, with no urgency from new GM Kyle Dubas to secure a new deal, the possibility of a trade is becoming more accurate, according to various reports.

While trading Sidney Crosby remains the least likely path for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the question arises: which teams could realistically be trade suitors if the scenario unfolds? The ideal candidate would be a team poised for a Stanley Cup push with the assets and determination to acquire Crosby, even on an expiring contract. The reported list includes the Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and Winnipeg Jets-all Western Conference teams, which would make it easier for Pittsburgh to consider a move.

At this point, the most probable outcome is Crosby signing a new contract with Pittsburgh, likely featuring his iconic $8.7 million AAV. However, with no deal yet, teams are preparing for the possibility, setting the stage for one of the most compelling trade deadlines in NHL history.
