The Seattle Seahawks need offensive line help. Left tackle is fine, but is anything else? Maybe not so much. One way to address this is to take an interior offensive lineman high in the 2025 NFL draft. This is unlikely, as general manager John Schneider has no history of doing so.
Another option could be chasing a higher-priced guard or center in free agency. Seattle currently has no cap space to make that kind of move, but 12s can assume that will change. The team will be forced to replace some expensive veterans while also maybe extending players such as wide receiver DK Metcalf and/or quarterback Geno Smith.
Seattle will make cap room. The question then becomes how to spend that money. Seattle should try to bring back linebacker Ernest Jones IV. He was a seminal piece of the defense after coming over in a trade midway through this past season. If he leaves in free agency, Seattle will need to take a linebacker high in the draft to pair with second-year pro Tyrice Knight.
Seattle Seahawks will have no chance to chase Chiefs guard Trey Smith in free agency
To get the team into postseason form, however, the interior offensive line has to be addressed. Schneider could do the unexpected and sign an impactful player in free agency. The GM, while making sure everyone knows that Seattle believes the offensive line is an issue, does not like to overspend on guards or at center. Maybe this offseason will be different.
Head coach Mike Macdonald's job is to take the players Schneider gives him and form that into a winner. Of course, it is easier to create a winner if a team has high-quality players. This is where Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith would have come in. That appears to no longer be an option in free agency, however.
According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are planning to franchise tag Smith. This means, of course, that he will not be available in free agency. Even if Schneider and the Seahawks were hoping to have a chance at Smith in free agency, that appears to no longer be an option.
Macdonald has to know that one of the greatest inefficiencies on his team is the offensive line. Fix that, and then maybe the Seahawks have a very real chance at making a run at the NFC West crown and also making the playoffs. Without that, Macdonald's team might be stuck going 9-8 or 10-7 again in 2025 and missing the playoffs.
