It appears that the Vancouver Canucks found the right audience with one of their costumes.
The Canucks posted pictures on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday of mascot Fin the Whale in a Deadpool costume to keep in the spirit of Halloween.
However, it wasn’t until the following day that the post caught the eye of Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds . He took to X on Friday with his reaction to the costume, notably tying in a pun to both the NHL’s beloved championship trophy, the Stanley Cup, and one of Marvel’s most well-known creators, the late Stan Lee.
“The Canucks have won the Stan Lee Cup,” said Reynolds in the post.
Reynolds also played into how lame the joke may have been in his post.
“(Silence. Followed by a slight breeze. A cough can be heard in the distance. A hawk circles)”
Deadpool is a character appearing in Marvel’s comic books, first appearing in 1991 and gaining a cult following by comic book fans for his role as an anti-hero in the universe, as well as the frequency that he breaks the fourth wall during his stories.
Deadpool gained even more popularity with the release of his first movie in 2016, where he was played by Reynolds. The movie was the 9th-highest-grossing movie of 2016 and was then followed up with Deadpool 2 in 2018 and Deadpool & Wolverine this past summer, with the third installment being the 20th-highest-grossing movie of all time.
Reynolds was born in Vancouver in 1976 and rose to fame as an actor throughout the 1990s and 2000s before reaching his current level of fame in the 2010s. He is also a well-documented fan of the Canucks.
The movie star is also a well-known businessman, with ownership stakes and investments in Mint Mobile, Match Group, as well as sports teams like the Formula 1 Alpine F1 Team and the Welsh soccer team, Wrexham, which he has also released an Emmy Award-winning docuseries about called Welcome to Wrexham. He also made an attempt to purchase a stake in the Ottawa Senators when the Eugene Melnyk estate was selling them but withdrew his stake before Michael Andlauer eventually purchased the team.
