According to multiple reports, the Denver Broncos will work out a pair of safeties today. Former Penn State linebacker/safety Justin Sutherland and former UFL safety Nico Bolden will get a chance to make the Broncos 90-man roster.
The Broncos need the safety depth after starter Brandon Jones suffered a minor hamstring injury that will sideline him for the next one to two weeks. On top of that, Caden Sterns is fresh off the PUP and will be eased back into things and Delarrin Turner-Yell remains on the PUP after tearing his ACL late last season.
The only healthy safeties on the Broncos roster right now are P.J. Locke, Devon Key, JL Skinner, Keidron Smither, and undrafted rookie Omar Brown with Sterns likely limited to individual work for now. So, the Broncos need some depth and I would expect one of these two to be signed tomorrow to add that depth.
These injuries will give players like Devon Key, JL Skinner, and Keidron Smith a chance to prove they can make the 53-man roster and potentially earn a role on defense. All three will likely get significant snaps during camp and during the preseason to prove they should stick around.
As for Sutherland and/or Bolden, they likely are not realistic 53-man roster options, but they can earn themselves a spot on the practice squad with a good showing these next few weeks (if they sign). So, there will be a lot of competition going on at safety and it will be interesting to see how it all works out in the coming weeks.
