The Las Vegas Raiders are in a state of limbo as they await the conclusion of the Davante Adams trade drama. Last week, the three-time All-Pro wide receiver informed the team that it was his preference to be traded away from the organization. In the days that have followed, many rumors and reports have linked him to the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints for obvious reasons.
The two quarterbacks that Adams has enjoyed the most success with during his NFL career are Aaron Rodgers of the Jets and Derek Carr of the Saints. Because of this, these two teams are considered the top two landing spots for the three-time All-Pro.
But recent events may have changed that.
Las Vegas Raiders Wide Receiver Davante Adams Could End Up Going Somewhere Else
The game of football played in the NFL is fast and ferocious. Any coach, player, or fan can attest to the fact that a game can change in the blink of an eye. The same is true of the business side of the sport.
As fans are well-aware by now, the Jets fired their head coach, Robert Saleh, on Tuesday morning. New York’s 2-3 start this year is not what team owner Woody Johnson expected, nor did he see the team making improvements from week to week. The Jets will now be led by interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, who was Saleh’s defensive coordinator.
While New York has not backed out of Adams trade talks, the fact that they just fired their head coach throws doubt on their willingness and/or ability to make another franchise-altering move so soon after the first.
Shifting attention south, Carr suffered an oblique injury in the Saints’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. He is expected to be out for a few weeks, making them a less attractive destination for the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.
While he does not have a no-trade clause, meaning the Raiders can send him anywhere they want, there are now serious questions regarding whether or not the Jets and Saints are really the best fits for Adams.
In addition to these doubts, it now appears that Adams’ professed timeline of the events that led to his trade request are being called into question.
Las Vegas Raiders Wide Receiver Davante Adams Requested a Trade Before Antonio Pierce’s Dubious Social Media Activity
Fans may recall that the news that Adams informed the Raiders that he wanted to be traded dropped last week after the wide receiver was informed by Kay Adams that his head coach, Antonio Pierce, liked a post on social media that stated the All-Pro had played his final game for the Raiders.
“I haven’t heard from [Antonio Pierce]. I haven’t talked to him,” Adams said on the show. “I don’t really know what that was about. Obviously social media is a beast, so it’s a lot of people out there that saw it and wondering what’s going on, and people reaching out.”
A new report, though, reveals that Pierce’s social media activity in this case occurred because Adams had already requested a trade.
“Last Sunday everything was fine. Before the game, during the game, after the game. Great,” Fox’s Jay Glazer said on Dan Le Batard Show. “He comes in Monday morning and texts Antonio Pierce to meet with him and AP thought it was about the hamstring. All of a sudden, he was like ‘Hey, I’m out. You got to get me out. I don’t want my career to end like this.'”
Knowing this, it is clear that when Davante told Kay that he had not heard from Pierce and that he did not know what his social media activity was about, he was lying.
What a messy situation this is!
