Raheem Morris’ brilliant plan for Falcons: Mimic the Lions

The Falcons are coming out of the bye week arguably lower than they’ve been all season long.

Not only are they hobbled, but they were embarrassed in back-to-back weeks by the Saints and Broncos, with every facet of Raheem Morris’ team failing.

Against New Orleans, it was Younghoe Koo and the special teams that let the Falcons down, but Kirk Cousins and the offense weren’t free of blame. Against Denver, the offense and defense didn’t even get on the plane in Atlanta.

It’s sparked a ton of skepticism among the fans that maybe, just maybe, the Falcons don’t have the right guy in charge. If that’s been your line of thinking, then you’re going to love these comments from Morris on Monday.

His brilliant plan is to simply execute and mimic the path of success the Lions have taken:

Oh, Gee! I wish I would’ve thought of that! Give me a few million dollars, and I can give you the secret to starting a dynasty — mimicking the Chiefs. If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.

The Falcons don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but changes are necessary, and most of them are on the defensive side of the ball. With Kirk Cousins and Zac Robinson in the fold, Atlanta’s offense is squarely among the better units in the league. However, the defense is a bottom-three group.

Personnel is somehow an issue, even though this is a defense with A.J. Terrell, Justin Simmons, Jessie Bates III, Kaden Elliss, Grady Jarrett, David Onyemata, and Matt Judon. All of those guys played at a high-level last year.

So yes, execution might be an issue, but let’s not pretend that Jimmy Lake isn’t also part of the problem. He’s got to put his guys in a position to succeed. There’s no way that group, with half playing at or near a Pro Bowl level last season, should be as bad as it is.
