Will he stay, or will he go?
That's the big question surrounding Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert right now.
According to ESPN's Eagles insider, Tim McManus, Goedert's days in Philly are likely over.
McManus shared his thoughts on the Goedert-Eagles situation, following the annual NFL league meetings in Palm Beach, Florida,
The Eagles did nothing this week to signal their intention to keep tight end Dallas Goedert on the roster; if anything, their comments pointed in the other direction.
"Right now, he's on our football team," coach Nick Sirianni said, when asked whether he wants Goedert back.
Sirianni went on to laud Goedert as a player and leader and said he wants all players who contributed to the Super Bowl season back, but added, "There's more to it than that." Money is at the root of the potential departure. The 30-year-old is in the final year of a deal that averages $14 million per season. The Eagles have signed a number of players to big-money contracts in recent years, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, receiver A.J. Brown, running back Saquon Barkley and linebacker Zack Baun.
With only so much cash to go around, they're making some tough choices this offseason on contributors with sizable salaries who haven't been identified as core options moving forward. Goedert's injury history (he has missed three-plus games in each of the past three seasons) appears to be working against him in that regard. Outside of him taking a pay cut, it's hard to envision Goedert returning to Philly in 2025. -- Tim McManus
Goedert is set to enter the final year of his four-year, $57 million contract extension this season. He will account for $11.8 million against the Eagles' cap but will carry $23.8 million in dead money in 2026 due to void years.
If Philly trades Goedert before June 1, they will cough up $21.39 million in dead money this year. However, trading him post-June 1 would reduce it to $7.76 million in dead money, which would save the Eagles $4.05 million this year, and then the rest would spill into next offseason. That would be the best option that would help the Eagles financially.
The problem now is finding a trade suitor. The Eagles were reportedly looking for a fourth-round pick in exchange for Goedert but have not found a team willing to do that.
It's starting to sound more and more like if the Eagles find the right offer, Goedert is gone.
