Thursday’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks did not result in any on-field fireworks, but it did feature some controversy off of it.
While coming out of the entrance tunnel, Raiders quarterback Geno Smith noticed a sign that said “bigger bust-Geno or Jamarcus Russell?” Needless to say, Smith did not appreciate the comparison, and made his feelings known to the fan holding the sign by holding double middle fingers towards them. Unfortunately for Smith, a photographer caught the moment, and the quarterback has found himself in some hot water.
With the incident making the rounds on sports media, Raiders head coach Pete Carroll made his thoughts clear on the matter.
Carroll had no problem explaining what he thought about Smith’s reaction.
During a press conference on Sunday, Carroll stood up for his quarterback with a single question.
“Did you see what the sign said? Next question,” Carroll responded to a question about the incident.
It is no surprise that Carroll would stick up for Smith given their history, but it is good to see no matter what.
The comparison is far from accurate, as the careers of Smith and Russell could not be any more different. Russell was drafted first overall by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2007 and proceeded to become arguably the biggest draft bust in NFL history. Smith, on the other hand, revitalized his career in Seattle under Carroll, turning into one of the better quarterbacks in the league over the past few seasons.
Even if Smith ends up with his wallet becoming a little lighter as a result of the incident, he likely has no regrets about what went down.
