The Patriots have a lot of holes they need to fix this offseason and one player alone is not going to solve their problems, especially a rookie. This is why the Patriots have been rumored to be considering trading down from the number four pick to get some veteran help and more assets.
In a recent Bleacher Report article, Alex Kay predicted that the Patriots trade the number four pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for DK Metcalf, the eighteenth pick in this year's draft, and the fiftieth pick in this year's draft. This would be the blockbuster trade the Patriots are looking for.
Although there are a lot of great prospects that are going to be up for grabs with the fourth pick, none of them have the resume of DK Metcalf star wide receiver for the Seahawks. Metcalf missed some games due to injury this past season, but the 27-year-old receiver is still in his prime and if healthy is one of the best in the game.
His large frame, athletic abilities, and experience would be perfect for Drake Maye's number one option. Metcalf had 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns this past season in just 15 games. The Patriots have a glaring hole at wide receiver and they not only need to get help but a star that can be relied on as their number one target.
It was mentioned in the article that the Patriots have not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Julian Edelman, they have not had a Pro Bowl receiver since Wes Welker, and they have not had a Pro Bowl pass catcher since Rob Gronkowski. That is why jumping at the chance for a proven Metcalf would be ideal for New England.
The best part of the trade is not only would the Patriots have their star wide receiver of the future and no longer have to worry about that, but they would also still have a first-round pick in the draft, and gain another second-round pick
The Patriots would still be getting the 18th pick in the draft where they could still pick up a great prospect. The Patriots need offensive linemen, and players like Alabama guard Tyler Booker, North Dakota St center/guard Grey Zabel, and Kelvin Banks Jr., offensive tackle from Texas are all projected to still be on the board at that time in Mel Kiper's latest mock draft.
If they do not go offensive line they could use this pick, and the other second-round pick they would be acquiring in this trade to fill other holes like defensive end, cornerback, and defensive tackle
This trade would give the Patriots a lot of options, and a lot of opportunities to fill all the holes that need work going into this upcoming season. The Patriots should try to work out a trade like this that allows them to bring in some veteran help, while also allowing them to draft and develop some young guys.
