Patriots Trade Idea Moves Multiple Draft Picks for Polarizing Steelers WR

Of the New England Patriots' needs, wide receiver is near the top of the list. The Patriots added Stefon Diggs in free agency, as well as Mack Hollins. But, there is still a need for another wide receiver, and this trade idea builds an offer from a new report indicating a receiver on the trade block.

Patriots Trade Idea Moves Multiple Draft Picks for Polarizing Steelers WR

According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports , the Pittsburgh Steelers are fielding offers for their polarizing wide receiver George Pickens. New England is in the market for a wide receiver, and their involvement in this rumor wouldn't be surprising.

This trade idea has the Patriots sending picks 77 and 144 for Pickens and pick 83. The Patriots would be giving up pick 144 and moving back six spots in the third round to add Pickens to an offense in need of wide receiver help.

The Steelers meanwhile would move up slightly in the draft, and add an early fifth round pick, giving the Steelers a stronger draft pool. Heading into the last year of his rookie contract, his 2024 season isn't forcing the Steelers to make a decision one way or another.

In 2024, Pickens had 59 receptions for 900 yards and three touchdowns. It wasn't his best year, but with fluctuations at quarterback, it was a solid year for Pickens. His rookie season in 2022 was similar to his 2024, as Pickens had 52 receptions for 801 yards and four touchdowns.

In 2023, Pickens had his career high in every major category. Pickens had 106 targets, 63 receptions, 1,140 receiving yards, and five receiving touchdowns. He also led the NFL in yards per reception at 18.1.

If the Patriots add Pickens, the hope would be he can produce closer to his 2023 marks. With Drake Maye at quarterback, the duo would likely hook up on plenty of deep-shots down the sideline. Their skillsets match each other well, as Pickens best strength is his field stretching ability, and Maye lacked that receiver in 2024.

Pickens would be a great addition to the wide receiver room in New England. He is the perfect compliment to the wide receiver room with Diggs, and would likely not cost a fortune to acquire. While only a one-year rental, it could be instrumental for Maye's development.
