Patrick Mahomes’ Mom Airs Frustration During Chiefs Preseason Opener

After settling down to watch son Patrick Mahomes lead the Kansas City Chiefs in Saturday’s preseason opener, Randi Mahomes learned a hard truth about the NFL.

Randi Mahomes has been one of her son’s biggest backers, regularly attending games and cheering on her son both online and in person. But she was left unable to watch Saturday’s game due to the NFL’s blackout rules, leading her to take her frustrations to social media.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will play in preseason Week 1.

Randi Mahomes ‘Not OK’ With Broadcast Rules

Randi Mahomes shared her excitement before Saturday’s game, taking to X to share a picture of the Chiefs quarterback holding his young son and offering an excited message.

“My boy and his boy, ready for game day,” Mahomes wrote. “Couldn’t be more proud and so excited for this season!!”

The excitement quickly turned to frustration. A short time later, Randi Mahomes shared another post with a picture of her television frozen with the logos of the Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals.

“This program’s blocked in your area,” the screen read.

Randi Mahomes, apparently unaware of local blackout rules, was not happy with the development.

“What’s up with this!!! NOT OK,” she wrote in another post on X.

Randi Mahomes Didn’t Miss Much

It’s not clear if Randi Mahomes found another way to watch the game, but there’s a good chance she missed her son’s action while trying to find an alternative. Though Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Patrick Mahomes would likely play a quarter, he ended up staying in for just one drive — and it was an abbreviated one, at that.

Mahomes finished the game 1-for-1, completing his only pass attempt for a 1-yard touchdown after the Cardinals fumbled the kickoff to put the Chiefs in scoring range. The Chiefs pulled Mahomes after that drive, keeping him fresh for the upcoming season.

Mahomes comes into the season with some extra motivation, coming off a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Mahomes said it was reminiscent of the team’s Super Bowl blowout at the hands of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which the team followed with two Super Bowl wins in the next three seasons.

“When you make it that far and then you’re at the end, it just hurts,” Mahomes said, via USA Today. “You put so much hard work into it. So, losing on that final step is always hard. But it’s how you respond. I thought we responded well after that last Super Bowl loss, just kind of building back and getting even better and winning a couple more championships.”

Mahomes added that he believes the team is at a crossroads and wants to see them come back stronger from the Super Bowl defeat.

“So, now it’s about, ‘Where are we going to go now? Are we going to get even better from that loss? Are we going to find ways to make everyone better, not just one person?’ I feel like we’ve done that in camp. But you can’t prove it until you go out there and do it,” Mahomes said.
