Patrick Mahomes gives ultimate sign of respect to Patriots amid Chiefs' dynastic run

As the Kansas City Chiefs look to do something no other team has done in the Super Bowl era, Patrick Mahomes has grown to appreciate what the New England Patriots did that much more. The Patriots, as Chiefs fans are well-aware, had two separate dynasties, winning three Super Bowls between the 2001-2004 seasons and then winning three more titles during the 2014-2018 seasons.

Kansas City Chiefs v New England Patriots

The Chiefs then promptly took over as the next great NFL dynasty, winning Super Bowls in 2020, 2023, and 2024 while striving to win another one in 2025. Doing so would give them the NFL's first-ever Super Bowl three-peat and that's something even the Patriots didn't do (or have a chance to do).

Mahomes revealed during Super Bowl media week that the Chiefs' current run has given him even more appreciation for what New England did for all of that time.

"I appreciate the greatness of the Patriots more now when I see how hard it was to do what they did," Mahomes said.

Patrick Mahomes now can relate to Patriots in a way not many others can

At the time of the Patriots' run, Chiefs fans (and the rest of the league) were sick and tired of seeing the same team run things in the AFC. It's funny to now see the Chiefs serving in the villain role and being the team that everyone is actively rooting against.

That being said, it's hard not to agree with Mahomes here. Now that Chiefs fans are experiencing the same thing that Patriots fans experienced from 2001 to 2019 (again, absurd that it lasted that long), it makes fans see how incredible a run that was for a single team.

A lot of people are going to make comparisons to the present day Chiefs and the 2000s and 2010s Patriots but maybe we can save those arguments and debates for down the road when this epic run eventually concludes (which hopefully isn't for a long time). For now, let's just enjoy the ride.
