The Green Bay Packers are 8-3 on the season following their 38-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon. It was a game that saw both sides missing key players, with Packers stars Jaire Alexander and Edgerrin Cooper out with injury. Additionally, wide receiver Romeo Doubs was taken out of the game after sustaining a concussion.
All three players have already been ruled out for Green Bay’s game against the Miami Dolphins on Thanksgiving.
San Francisco, of course, was without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who is dealing with a shoulder injury. They also did not have All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa, who has hip and oblique injures. Trent Williams, the future Hall of Fame left tackle, also did not play.
After the game, many insinuated that the only reason the Packers won the game was because the 49ers were dealing with so many injuries. The players were having none of it.
“It’s the NFL. It’s not an excuse. We didn’t have our quarterback. We won three games, so we don’t wanna hear that. We came to play. They should’ve came to play,” Keisean Nixon said.
This stance was echoed by Jordan Love, who stated, “It’s the NFL, they’ve got other good players. We’ve had injuries, guys are banged up. You gotta find a way to go out there and win, no matter who’s out there. It’s tough for them, but we’ll take the win.”
From the Packers’ perspective, what their stars said was true. Love missed two whole games (and half of another one) with injuries. Green Bay was able to win each one.
One 49ers star also agrees that injuries are no excuse not to win, but did reveal that he played against the Packers (and several games prior) with a pretty significant injury.
In a recent interview with reporters, San Francisco linebacker Fred Warner revealed that he has been playing on a fractured ankle since Week Four, a 49ers 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots. Warner did not play at all in the second half of that game after sustaining his injury. However, he has played in every game since.
“It’s something I deal with every game,” Warner said according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “I get on that table before every game and get it shot up every single game just to be able to roll. But it’s not an excuse. It’s just what it is. That’s the NFL. You’re not going to be healthy. You’ve got to go out there, you’ve got to find ways to execute, to play at a high level and to win every single week.”
Warner’s comments sound very similar to those that Love and Nixon made after the game. In the NFL, no one cares if a player is hurt or not. They want to see production.
