Jaire Alexander is still on the Packers. I know, I wasn't sure either. But I checked.
For the past few months, it's felt like the eventual conscious uncoupling between the Packers and Alexander was inevitable. For any number of reasons, it always seemed like a split was not only going to happen, but also the right decision.
Things heated up even more last week, when ESPN Packers insider Rob Demovsky speculated that there could be moment within the next few hours/days. That, uh, wasn't the case – shake it off Rob, happens to the best of us – but that doesn't mean anything about the endgame has changed. In a new piece from Demovsky about new Packers CB Nate Hobbs, the Packers insider throws in a ... interesting? semi-noteworthy? ... nugget about where things stand currently.
"While Alexander remains on the roster, the Packers are still trying to trade him, according to team sources and a source close to the player. They could wait indefinitely but most likely would prefer to get something done before next month's draft. One source said the team has not approached Alexander about taking a pay cut and that even if it did, he would not be willing to do so. Without a trading partner, the Packers would likely release him, but there is no urgency to do so because he has no guaranteed money left on his deal until the start of the regular season, when he's due $17.5 million"
Keep fighting the good fight, Brian Gutekunst. Maybe someone will finally pick up the phone one of these weeks. All it takes is one desperate team looking to get their fans off their back to make a dumb trade. The Cowboys are always there for you when you need truly them.
So, basically, as we head into Week 2 of Free Agency, nothing's changed: Alexander's still on the Packers, and the Packers still wish he wasn't. We'll see you in Week 3 – maybe we'll have a trade to talk about then. And at this point, I'll even just take cryptic IG post or something.
