Quarterback Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes as the Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-7 in an NFL preseason game on Saturday night.
In the NFL’s other preseason games on Saturday night:
· In a game with only 141 passing yards – 85 by New York and 56 by Carolina – the Jets posted a 15-12 victory over the Panthers with five field goals – one by Greg Zuerlein and four by Austin Seibert.
· Indianapolis had 166 rushing yards and got touchdown runs by three players in a 21-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
· In his first appearance of the preseason, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed all five of his passes on an opening touchdown drive to start the Dolphins on their way to a 13-6 victory over the Washington Commanders.
· The Buffalo Bills had more than twice as many rushing yards as passing yards and got three field goals from Tyler Bass to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 9-3.
· Brayden Narveson kicked a 46-yard field goal on the game’s final snap to lift the Tennessee Titans to a 16-15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
· Rookie wide receiver JJ Lapp caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Stetson Bennett IV in the fourth quarter to send the Rams past the Chargers 13-9 in an all-Los Angeles contest.
· The Dallas Cowboys pulled away to a 27-12 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including 69-yard interception return by cornerback Kemon Hall. Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey made a 66-yard field goal on the final snap of the first half, equaling the longest in NFL history, although because it occurred in the preseason it does not enter the record book.
After three seasons as the New England Patriots’ starter, Jones is competing for the backup spot behind Trevor Lawrence on the Jacksonville depth chart. Against the Buccaneers, the former Alabama All-American completed 16-of-23 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 14 yards on six carries.
Jacksonville’s plan for Saturday night had been for Jones and C.J. Beathard to play one half apiece.
Jones started and had the Jaguars ahead 10-7 at halftime with a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Parker Washington with 7:30 left in the first half.
Beathard completed 5-of-7 passes for 40 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions and ran twice for 10 yards. But he also was roughed up, sacked three times for 32 yards in losses, and left the game in the fourth quarter.
Jones returned to the field and threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brevin Easton with 5:07 to play.
