The Miami Dolphins still have a lot of work to do, but they got started on digging their way out of a hole by getting a 32-26 overtime win against the New York Jets in Week 14.
With the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, and Indianapolis Colts all on bye, only one other result over the weekend really mattered much for Miami. In a Sunday Night Football contest, the Kansas City Chiefs helped the Dolphins out a bit by hitting a 31-yard bank shot field goal as time expired to beat the Los Angeles Chargers.
With only the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals left to play in Week 14, the playoff picture is pretty simple now with only four games left for almost every team. Here’s how it stands after Sunday:
- (y) Kansas City Chiefs: 12-1
- (y) Buffalo Bills: 10-3
- Pittsburgh Steelers: 10-3
- Houston Texans: 8-5
- Baltimore Ravens: 8-5
- Los Angeles Chargers: 8-5
- Denver Broncos: 8-5
- Indianapolis Colts: 6-7
- Miami Dolphins: 6-7
- Cincinnati Bengals: 4-8
(y – clinched division title)
While there’s some wacky scenarios still mathematically possible, realistically it’s pretty simple for Miami. Thanks to a 5-4 record against conference opponents, the Dolphins will likely have a tiebreaker win against any of the three teams currently sitting in wild card spots if they manage to catch up.
It’s not a great chance, but if the Dolphins keep winning, they only need the Ravens, Chargers, or Broncos to leave the door open.
