NFL insider hints at New York Giants trading for vet QB: 5 potential solutions

After utilizing a trio of veterans in Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito, only the latter is set to return to the New York Giants in 2025.

This means the Giants not only need to find their quarterback of the future, they need to add at least two signal-callers to the roster this offseason.

The Giants did land the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, which could be used to select a franchise QB of the future. However, the latest speculation from ESPN’s Field Yates suggests they’ll try trading for a veteran QB before the draft even gets underway.

“The two teams most pressed to upgrade at quarterback this offseason are the Giants and Raiders, and I wouldn’t rule out New York pursuing a veteran via a trade before we even get to the draft.”

Trading for a veteran quarterback could make a lot of sense for a regime that’s entering its fourth season with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll calling the shots. After winning just three games in 2024, the Giants’ sense of urgency to generate some wins in 2025 has to be at an all-time high.

Yet, if the Giants are deadset on trading for a veteran QB, who should they target? Let’s look at a few potential solutions.

  • Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons: Benched for Michael Penix, the four-time Pro Bowl QB will need a new team in 2025. The soon-to-be 37-year-old led the NFL with 16 interceptions but has shown elite accuracy in other stops.
  • Jake Browning, Cincinnati Bengals: Soon-to-be 29-year-old who’s backed up Joe Burrow since 2021. Browning led the Bengals to a 4-3 record while completing 70.4% of his passes in 2023. Averaged 215 YPG and had a 12/7 TD: INT ratio.
  • Sam Howell, Seattle Seahawks: Perhaps the Giants wanted to make a play for the former Washington Commanders QB last offseason, but their NFC East rivals were never going to send a QB to a divisional foe. Now, the Giants could turn back for the soon-to-be 25-year-old with 18 starts to his name. Howell had an impressive 21 passing touchdowns in 2023, but that also came with an NFL-leading 21 interceptions.
  • Joe Milton, New England Patriots: Soon-to-be 25-year-old with a rocket arm. Drafted in the sixth round in 2024, Milton completed 75% of his passes for 241 yards and a touchdown in a Week 18 win over the Bills.
  • Gardner Minshew, Las Vegas Raiders: Soon-to-be 29-year-old who’s already started for four teams. Led Colts to a 7-6 record with a 15/9 TD: INT ratio to earn a Pro Bowl nod in 2023. Had a career-high 66.3% completion rate in 2024 but was benched for Aidan O’Connell after having 9 TD and 10 INT in nine starts.
