Mike Macdonald says all the words many Seahawks fans will not like

Many 12s won't want this.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald

There are some 12s that believe Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has a say over who is on the roster, and that he can sign and release players. He cannot. That job is general manager John Schneider's. Schneider constructs the roster and Macdonald is tasked with forming that into a winner.

Macdonald admitted earlier this offseason that he has no real control over whether Geno Smith is a quarterback for the team or not. The head coach can determine if Smith is QB1 or a backup, though, and the coaching staff made the correct decision to keep Smith as the starter this season and not replace him with Sam Howell.

Assuming Smith stays on the roster next season, Macdonald and his new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, will almost certainly have Smith stay as QB1. Of course, how confident Macdonald feels in the direction of an offense led by Smith is something altogether different. Maybe Macdonald assumes the Seahawks will have a new quarterback in 2026.

He doesn't sound like he believes that, however.

Mike Macdonald believes the Seattle Seahawks can win a Super Bowl with Geno Smith at quarterback

In a recent interview with Aaron Levine of Seattle's FOX 13. not only does the head coach see Smith remaining as the long-term starter, but Macdonald thinks Seattle can win a Super Bowl with the quarterback. Many 12s might doubt that possibility, but the fact is the coach's opinion outranks any fan. 12s just have to hope Macdonald is correct in his summation of Smith.

Macdonald told Levine, "Geno is our quarterback...I don't understand the conversation (of replacing Smith). It's pretty obvious this guy is a heck of a quarterback. He's our quarterback. We love him. Can't wait to go to work with him...And I know he's really excited about (Kubiak) taking over. This guy, yeah, he's a great player, man. And we can win a championship with Geno Smith."

Of course, Macdonald might just be in offseason selling mode. He isn't going to say that his team is not good and cannot win at a high level, but he did appear honest during the season when asked about certain players. He could have said that Smith is a good quarterback but the offense still needs to work on many things. Instead, the head coach was effusive in his praise.

It is also doubtful that Macdonald and Schneider's views of the quarterback differ greatly. If there is a disconnect between the coach and the GM then that could turn out to be a bad thing. Most likely, Seattle will not release Smith or take a quarterback in this year's draft. Either way, while Macdonald thinks Geno Smith can win a championship, John Schneider has the final say over whether Smith stays on the team.
