NFL has Chicago's back after punishing Panthers player for hit that will cause key Bears starter to miss game vs. Jaguars
It seems like the NFL has the Chicago Bears back after the latest news that was announced on Saturday.
The league has fined Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble $17,083 for unnecessary roughness and use of a helmet for a play that occurred against the Bears in Week 5.Tremble was injured on the play and left the game with a concussion.
Earlier this week, Bears safety Jaquan Brisker, who took the brunt of the hit, self-reported concussion-like symptoms and has since been ruled out for Week 6's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Tremble was also ruled out for the Panthers Week 6 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
That's exactly why the league is cracking down on these types of plays and hopefully taking money from player's pockets will lead to some changes.
On the play, Brisker noted he was a little shaken up but still finished the game. And it was a critical moment for the defense. After taking the big collision, Brisker was still able to force the fumble that was recovered by his teammates. Two plays later, the Bears offense was able to score a touchdown off the turnover.
After learning that Brisker wasn't making the trip to London due to the concussion, head coach Matt Eberflus finally weighed in on the play that injured one of his key defensive starters on the backend.
"I've taught this way of tackling that we tackle since '95," Eberflus said on Wednesday. "It's a hamstring tackle, tackle with your shoulders, where it's a low tackle. And that's what he was executing on that play. He had a shoulder in there and just went helmet to helmet somehow. You're always concerned for Jaquan and making sure that I said my prayers. I talked to him about that. He's done a good job of keeping his head out of the gate, and that was an unfortunate incident on that play."
It equally concerning when you realize that Week 6's matchup will be Brisker's fifth game missed due to a concussion since being drafted by Chicago in 2022. It's obviously something he wants to manage better for the sake of his health and career, it's just unfortunate to see it happen like this where there's nothing he could have done better to avoid the collision.
Hopefully this is something that will start to decrease around the league going forward once more players get the message.
