There was some talk that the New York Giants had Matthew Stafford high on their list of potential starting quarterbacks in 2025. With general manager Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll heading into their fourth season together, likely on the hot seat after a three-win season, adding a highly capable veteran made a lot of sense.
Yet, now that the Los Angeles Rams re-committed to Stafford in the form of a contract adjustment and pay raise, the former Super Bowl winner is off the board. This has the Giants considering other options, including another Pro Bowler, who’s much younger than the 37-year-old Stafford.
‘Chatter’ emerges of New York Giants considering Sam Darnold acquisition

There are a number of other veteran quarterbacks the New York Giants could consider. That includes the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, or the top free agent QB available, Sam Darnold.
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Dan Graziano, the Giants may now be “looking into” acquiring Darnold.
“Even if they draft a signal-caller, the Giants could still add a veteran in case the draft pick needs time to develop. I know they’ve looked into Aaron Rodgers, but I’m not sure how likely that is to happen. I believe the Giants would have some interest in Kirk Cousins, too, once he’s released by the Falcons and is available on a veteran minimum deal. But Cousins comes with health concerns that would have to be addressed first. There was also at least some chatter about them looking into Sam Darnold after the news broke Friday that Stafford was staying in Los Angeles.”

Darnold would be the most expensive acquisition. Yet, if the Giants were really willing to trade for and pay Stafford, then a move for Darnold, who’s 10 years younger, but much less accomplished, shouldn’t be out of the question.
