Seahawks urged to take risk on 5-time Pro Bowler to complete new-look offensive line

The Seattle Seahawks spent valuable draft capital on improving one of the league's worst offensive lines when they used a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on North Dakota State's Grey Zabel, but it would be ridiculous to declare the line an inflexible, solid unit.

The starting center and right guard at the time of writing are Olu Oluwatomi and Christian Haynes, both of whom aren't striking fear into anyone's hearts. If any position on the roster is in need of an immediate upgrade, look no further than the OL. One analyst is begging Seattle to be more proactive in fixing this hole.

ESPN's Aaron Schatz believes that the best course of action for Seattle in the waning months of the 2025 NFL offseason is to improve their offensive line by signing veteran free agent Brandon Scherff. If this became reality, Scherff would likely become an instant starter at right guard.

Scherff, a former No. 4 overall pick who has dealt with injuries quite often over the last half-decade, will likely have a market of contending teams in need of one more impactful run-blocker. Seattle can't afford to keep him waiting.

Scherff has dealt with injuries often in his career, but that didn't stop him from making five Pro Bowls in a six-season span with Washington. He started off his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in solid form, but his body let him down near the end of that tenure.

While Scherff never reached his Washington level of performance during his time in North Florida, he was a reliable starter who would put Haynes and others fighting for positioning on Seattle's depth chart. Scherff might be willing to take a short-term deal after a down 2024 season.

Zabel should be a quality starter on the interior for Seattle, but everything else on the Seattle interior offensive line screams risk and uncertainty. Haynes and Oluwatimi are both below-average players currently, and a Seahawks team inches away from the playoffs last year needs someone who can keep Sam Darnold upright.

Scherff is the type of high-upside veteran stopgap that contenders around the league will likely have a very keen interest in signing, especially if the injury bug strikes early. Scherff may not only start right away, but he could kick Haynes over to center in a move that benefits both player and team alike.
