Drake Maye’s thoughts on the Stefon Diggs signing

The New England Patriots desperately needed playmakers in 2024, with their leading receiver being tight end Hunter Henry, posting 674 yards.

While multiple receivers made contributions and showed potential, including Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas, the Patriots needed a go-to guy for Drake Maye. The answer was Stefon Diggs, who signed a three-year contract in free agency to be the WR1 for the second-year quarterback.

Drake Maye spoke to the media for the first time since the 2024 season today, with a chance to finally give his thoughts on the acquisition. The media asked how excited he was about the signing, to which he replied:

“Shoot, Stefon, he was one of those guys growing up when I was in high school, he was young in the league, and I had him on my fantasy team. Y’know, I was playing with him in Madden, so it’s pretty cool now this season to be throwing to him, he’s coming back from injury, and it looks like he’s doing great. It’s going to be cool to throw to a receiver who’s made plays like he has.”

Stefon Diggs, now 31 years old, missed a lot of the 2024 season through injury, having been traded to the Houston Texans prior to the season’s start.

In the eight games he played with CJ Stroud, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns. One of those games was against the New England Patriots, when Diggs caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown against them in Week 6.

New weapons for Drake Maye in 2025

Stefon Diggs was the biggest addition of the off-season, with the two-time All-Pro signing a hefty deal to play for the Patriots. He wasn’t the only pass catcher they added, though.

Mack Hollins came over from the Buffalo Bills, having previously played for the Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons. Hollins has proven he can be a big body target down the field, and caught a career high six touchdowns in Buffalo in 2024.

New England then added wide receiver Kyle Williams in the 2025 NFL draft, a wide receiver who had been Cam Ward’s primary target at Washington State in 2023. Williams was loved by a lot of teams in the NFL, possessing great speed and concentration at the catch point.

He could be a budding star in the offense, and it’s immediately clear that the Patriots have a much stronger group of playmakers than they did in 2024.
