FOXBOROUGH, Mass - The New England Patriots have made a lot of offseason additions, but there is one who has a huge opportunity to be a game-changer for Drake Maye and the entire offense.
Coming off a torn ACL, Stefon Diggs signed with the Patriots on a three-year deal. And on Thursday, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels detailed how he feels about getting to work with the four-time Pro Bowl receiver.
"(Stefon Diggs) is a unique individual, a unique player. He’s got a really good skill set; he’s been a very productive player for a long time. I’m excited about his addition," McDaniels explained. "My brother had an opportunity to coach him last year in Houston, so I have a little bit of insight into what he's like day to day, and I'm really excited about having him here."
As for wide receivers coach Todd Downing, he had some personal experience working with Diggs during his time with Minnesota.
“I don’t know if recruiting is the right word, but I was definitely part of the visit. I was excited that we got him. I can tell you that,” Downing explained. “That year (in Minnesota) with Stef was awesome. It was a challenging year because we weren’t quite as successful as we wanted to be. But we were able to see each other’s love of the game and competitive spirit."
“Seeing Stef as a little bit more mature version of himself on the visit here, it was so awesome to reconnect with him and see where he’s at in life and hear about some of his ups and downs throughout the years we were apart," he added. "Excited to be back with him for sure.”
Across his 10 years in the league, Diggs has a total of 857 receptions for 10,491 receiving yards and 70 receiving touchdowns in 144 games played. He also had six straight 1,000 yard receiving seasons before tearing his ACL in week 8 of the 2024 season. .
So, his resume speaks for itself. Now, it's just a matter of his recovery and when they can get him on the field.
