Lions QB Jared Goff Gets Surprise Boost Ahead of New Season

The Detroit Lions are in that subdued time during the offseason when things are happening, but it’s certainly calm compared to what it’s going to get like towards the end of July. The team is looking at their current lineup and seeing where they need to add or delete some depth, based on the players in place.

While the Lions’ quarterback room isn’t large, they do have franchise quarterback Jared Goff who has help lead this team to two of the most successful seasons in franchise history. While Goff isn’t a flashy quarterback, like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, he’s been reliable, minus the performance in last season’s playoffs against the Commanders, of course.

Now, Goff has received some good news that should make the Lions happy going into the new season and also remind them of why he’s their No. 1 guy.

A Solid Showing for Lions QB Jared Goff

Goff has always had solid numbers, but sometimes, he’s a bit buried by some of the other quarterbacks in the league. A lot of the success of a quarterback also has to do with their offensive line, and thankfully, the Lions are surrounding Goff with some solid players.

In a piece published on Friday, June 27, Mason Cameron of PFF names the top quarterbacks in the NFL going by their time to throw last season. Some may be surprised that Goff makes the cut for one of the top 10 quarterbacks to throw over 2.5 seconds, coming in at No. 9.

On that tally, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens is No. 1 with a 95.0 passing grade. Goff is No. 9 with a 77.5 passing grade. Justin Herbert, Derek Carr, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen round out the top five in that category.

Cameron even singled out Goff to give him props, noting that the player “continues to make strides in this facet. The Lions quarterback may not extend plays like some other names on this list, but he knows how to buy time for route concepts to develop downfield.” He added that Goff “not only racked up the most yards per attempt on this list (9.7) but also managed to pace the league in rate of accurately thrown balls (65.5%).”

So, Goff has the goods to be one of the best passing quarterbacks in the league this year. It will be interesting to see how he moves forward without offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. While Goff and Johnson made for a fantastic duo, hopefully Goff has developed enough to the point where he can go forward with less direction and guidance.

Another Lions Player Getting Attention

Another Lions player is getting attention, too, in Ahmed Hassanein. The rookie appears in a video clip posted by The Detroit Times, where he’s bench pressing more than 400 pounds. As someone who bench presses 10 pounds, this is seriously mind-boggling.

Defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers also sang his praises in a May meeting, stating, “You’re talking about an impressive young man. A guy (that’s) been in the United States eight years, comes in, has to learn English and gets drafted in the National Football League? That’s impressive.”
