It seems the Detroit Lions are going to need a cornerback this offseason.
Carlton Davis was the team's top corner for the 2024 season until an injury ended his year.
Now Davis is set to hit free agency and he made it clear in a recent post that he's ready to test the open market and get paid.
That could take the Lions out of the running to bring him back on a new deal.
If Davis leaves, the Lions are going to need to add to a corner group that includes Amik Robertson, Terrion Arnold, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Pro Football and Sports Network's Sterling Xie has an interesting idea for who that new cornerback could be.
In a recent article, Xie predicted the Lions would trade for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.
Diggs had a great start to his NFL career. As a rookie he held opposing QBs to just a 54.8% completion percentage when they threw in his direction.
His second season saw him earn First Team All-Pro honors as he led the NFL in interceptions with 11. In his third season he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl.
Diggs has had some injury issues in the couple of seasons since then. In 2023 he played in just two games before an ACL tear suffered in practice brought his season to an end.
This past season he missed six of the Cowboys' last seven games, but had gotten back on track before the injury issues.
In 2024, Diggs held opposing QBs to a 60% completion percentage and only allowed 7.2 yards per attempt when opponents threw his way.
His yards per attempt allowed were less than Davis, who allowed 7.5 per attempt for the Lions this past season.
Diggs could be a long-term answer for the Lions as he is only 27 and is under contract for four more years.
The Lions would also have options if the move doesn't work out as the dead cap on his deal becomes very manageable after the 2025 season.
Diggs certainly wouldn't be cheap, but adding a proven corner who has a knack for making big plays could be worth the investment if the Cowboys are actually willing to part with Diggs.
