Now, the 40-year-old is ready to hand over the reins to the next generation.

The Los Angeles Lakers star had just completed his first year in the NBA when he took part on the Athens Olympics in 2004, watching the men's team lose three games and leave with only a bronze medal. James led the "Redeem Team" that won gold in 2008, then took home gold again in 2012 and 2024.

James said after the Paris Olympics last summer that he didn't see himself returning for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, and this week reiterated that belief. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, James said he wants to continue supporting Team USA but won't be taking the court again.

"Nothing has changed. Where we at, man, 2025 right now?" James said with a laugh. "Nah, nothing has changed. I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that, me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that’s for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don’t see it happening."

It's not clear whether James will still be in the NBA the next time the Summer Olympics roll around. He will be 43 by then, and currently has one season left on his contract with the Lakers.

Though he may not suit up for Team USA again in his career, James said he was grateful he got to take part in the Olympics.

"I’ve given everything that I have, and I will always be appreciative and loyal and dedicated to Team USA and USA Basketball," he said.
