Las Vegas Raiders waive young players to get their roster-cutting process started

The Las Vegas Raiders are trying to cut their roster down from 91 players, with David Agoha, an International Pathway program player being the exemption, to 53 players by this week. The Raiders have already gotten a head start.

We pretty much know the players that will for sure get cut -- the players that will end up being practice squad guys in 2024, whether it be for the Raiders or a different team.

The team's management, including head coach Antonio Pierce and General Manager Tom Telesco, are making decisions based on performance during training camp and preseason games.

For instance, Tyreik McAllister, who has shown versatility and skill in punt returns and as a receiver, is on the verge of making the roster due to his standout performances against the San Francisco 49ers, as well as the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings.

There's considerable interest in who secures the final spots, especially at positions like defensive end where players like Janarius Robinson, Charles Snowden, and Elerson Smith are competing. The decision might hinge on versatility, special teams' contribution, or specific game situations where one player might have an edge.

The Raiders have already begun the process of trimming their roster. Notable cuts include players like WR Terrell Bynum, DT Marquan McCall, DT Noah Shannon, and DE Ron Stone Jr., indicating the team's direction in thinning out the roster depth, particularly on the defensive line.

We know the depth they have behind the starters is pretty good, such as guys like Matthew Butler, Adam Butler, Tyree Wilson, and even Byron Young, who still has to work on some of his run defense.

As the deadline approaches, the Raiders are in meetings, reviewing tapes, and making final evaluations. The process includes not just cutting players but also scanning the waiver wire for potential pickups that could bolster their roster. They still have a lot more tough decisions to make. And, remember, just because a player gets cut or waived, doesn't mean they can't find their way back on the team.
