Kansas City Chiefs: Travis Kelce Hilariously Roasts Patrick Mahomes After Behind-the-Back Pass Explanation

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped their second preseason game, a contest against the Detroit Lions, by the score of 24-23. However, the only story that will be talked about in the days to come was a magnificent behind-the-back pass that Patrick Mahomes threw to Travis Kelce in the first quarter of the game.

As one can see in the video above, Mahomes rolled to his right as the Lions’ defense barreled down on him. Instead of taking a sack, Mahomes threw the ball behind his back a la an NBA point guard to Kelce, who caught the pass and ran for a first down.

As incredible as the play was, Mahomes revealed later that it was not planned and, in fact, he only made the throw because he was angry at Kelce.

During an interview with Trent Green on the sidelines, Mahomes revealed that he only threw the behind-the-back pass to Kelce because he was furious that his tight end ran the wrong route.

“Long story short, Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run, and it was kind of a behind-the-back pass because I was mad. I was p—– off at Travis. He was supposed to run a flat route– I don’t know if you could hear me on the broadcast, I’m yelling at him– and then he doesn’t run it. So, out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it’s going to be a highlight.”

Mahomes finished his day with six completions in seven passing attempts for 99 yards and a touchdown. The improbable reception was Kelce’s only catch of the day, and he attributed it to being in the right place at the right time.

When asked about what Mahomes said about running the wrong route, Kelce responded in a way that only he could: by making fun of his quarterback’s voice.

“It wasn’t a play? No, it was a play! It was a first down! You know, he’s got the voice thing,” Kelce said before he [badly] imitated Mahomes’ voice. “So he kind of mumbled out the play. I couldn’t hear it. So I was walking to the line, I was trying to decipher what he was saying. Before I knew it, he snapped the ball and, uh, yeah and then I kind of saw him out of my peripheral run to the sidelines. So I was trying to go help my guy out.

“By the time I looked over there, he was already in mid-form like photo on a sports card throwing he ball to me. So I guess it was just in the right place at the right time.”

Regardless of how or why it happened, it was a great play by two great players with fantastic chemistry.

That chemistry is a big reason why Kansas City has been so successful over the past few years and why they have a good chance of winning a third-straight Super Bowl this year.
