Kansas City Chiefs Named as Possible Destination for 1x Super Bowl-Winning WR on Roster Bubble

The Kansas City Chiefs are already one of the most feared teams in the NFL, having won the Super Bowl in each of the last two seasons. However, like all NFL teams, they have their weaknesses. The only way they can win a record third-consecutive Super Bowl is if the rest of their roster can overcome their weaknesses or if they address them before or early in the season.

One of the most glaring question marks on their current roster is at the wide receiver position. Admittedly, Kansas City has already proven that they can win the Super Bowl without a deep group of wide receivers, thanks to the All-Pro talents of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Still, one cannot ignore the serious concerns that the roster has at the position.

Why the Kansas City Chiefs Should Be Concerned with Their Wide Receiver Depth

Last season, then-rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice had a promising first NFL season, catching 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. Only Kelce had more receptions and yards on the team, and no Chiefs player had as many touchdown receptions as him.

But after him, Justin Watson had 460 yards, Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS) had 315, Skyy Moore had 244, Kadarius Toney had 169, and Mecole Harman had 118.

Of these players, MVS is already gone and Toney likely will be cut.

The Chiefs did use their first-round pick on speedster Xavier Worthy, but he is not proven anything in the NFL yet. They also signed Marquis “Hollywood” Brown in free agency, but he is dealing with recovery from a shoulder injury he suffered Kansas City’s first preseason game.

NFL Analyst Suggests the Kansas City Chiefs Sign Wide Receiver Robert Woods If He Gets Cut by the Houston Texans

The upcoming days are going to see hundreds of players cut from NFL rosters as teams trim down their squads to 53 players. One of the players that some believe is in jeopardy of being released is Houston Texans wide receiver Robert Woods.

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report writes of Woods’ situation with the Texans:

“Nico Collins and Tank Dell were huge assets to the offense last season. Noah Brown was an underrated weapon for them and they traded for Stefon Diggs. John Metchie III has flashed the ability to help in training camp and the preseason.

“All of a sudden it’s hard to justify the 32-year-old Woods when they could save nearly $5 million in cap space by cutting the veteran.”

Last season, Woods had 40 receptions for 426 yards and a touchdown on a Texans offense that became stacked with young playmakers seemingly overnight. As Ballentine points out, this influx of youth may force Woods out the door in Houston.

And if it does, he thinks that Kansas City should look into signing him, noting, “The Chiefs should be looking at every opportunity to find receiver help, especially with Marquise “Hollywood” Brown status up in the air after dislocating his shoulder.”

If released, Woods will be searching for his fourth team in as many seasons. He is nearly five seasons removed from his last 1,000+ campaign with the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 2021.

However, given the state of Kansas City’s wide receiver room, he may be worth a taking a flyer on.
