The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Buffalo Bills in a high-scoring thriller. The Bills quarterback Josh Allen, despite being on the receiving end of the fortunes, registered six touchdowns, three passing and three rushing.
The 2018 seventh pick strengthened the MVP case after another week of masterclass. In the last game against the San Francisco 49ers, Allen became the first quarterback to add a receiving, rushing, and passing touchdown in a single game—a triple threat, if one may. Allen, who will be making his sixth consecutive playoffs, channeled the momentum throwing 22 of 37 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, he rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns.
The fortunes unfortunately didn’t favor the Bills on Sunday evening. The win could have led them closer to becoming the top seed in the AFC and receiving a first-round bye. Kansas City Chiefs, who are looking for a historic three-peat, are 12-1 with the single loss against the Bills.
Speaking to the media after the game, Josh Allen took responsibility for the disappointing loss. He admitted that he would like to play better for the team and the boys.
Allen emphasized the need to score on the first play after a pass interference penalty put the Bills on the one-yard line. Despite having all three timeouts, the failed quarterback sneak forced them to use one, leaving only two timeouts. This allowed the Rams to run down the clock with a fourth-down punt into the end zone.
Despite Josh Allen’s masterclass, the Bills make an unwanted new NFL record
Josh Allen delivered a near-perfect game on Sunday, giving more reasons why he should be the top contender for the MVP once again. After being in a neck-and-neck battle in the past week with Saquon Barkley, Allen has propelled himself forward with unparalleled mastery.
Allen became the first player in NFL history to register three passing and rushing touchdowns in a single game. He tied Patrick Mahomes for the least number of games (107) to reach 250 career touchdowns, Allen’s six vs. Rams put his total to 252. He also recorded the highest fantasy points for a quarterback, 51.22.
What led to the loss despite such impressive records and stats begetting the game? Dante Koplowitz-Fleming pointed out that teams scoring at least six touchdowns and committing zero turnovers were 245-0 in the Super Bowl era, including playoffs. Josh Allen alone accounted for six touchdowns (three passing and three rushing).
Despite the Bills not turning the ball over, they became the first team to lose under these conditions, breaking the perfect record.
As the Bills gear up for one of their biggest challenges this season against the Detroit Lions, they need a haul in the locker room. As much as Allen wants to shoulder the blame, the defense and even the coaching needs a brush up if they want to go all the way.
