Jets Are New Betting Favorites to Trade for $68 Million All-Pro WR

The New York Jets are in a perfect position to strike.

On Thursday, July 31, Terry McLaurin officially requested a trade from the Washington Commanders, per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. It didn’t take long for betting odds to come out on McLaurin’s next potential destination.

Jaime Eisner of The Draft Network revealed on social media that the Jets have the best odds of landing McLaurin at +300.

Rounding out the top five are the New England Patriots (+400), the Los Angeles Chargers (+500), the Las Vegas Raiders (+600), followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers (+700), per SportsBetting.ag.

Contract Drama Led to Trade Request

McLaurin, 29, has one year left on his $68.3 million contract. The former Ohio State product is “frustrated with negotiations on a contract extension,” ESPN’s John Keim explained.

“A sticking point has been McLaurin’s age. He would be 31 when an extension begins, an age when teams are reluctant to pay big money for receivers,” Keim added.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter revealed that McLaurin “wants considerably more” than the $33 million annual salary that was given to DK Metcalf by the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.

The Commanders and McLaurin have not been close on a deal, Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Production Speaks for Itself, Would Be a Massive Upgrade for Jets at WR

McLaurin entered the NFL as the No. 76 overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Across his six seasons in the league, McLaurin has earned a second-team All-Pro nomination and two Pro Bowl berths.

He has racked up 460 receptions for 6,379 receiving yards and has scored 38 receiving touchdowns.

McLaurin is coming off a career-high season in touchdown catches (13).

NFL Analyst Lists Jets Among Teams to Watch in McLaurin Sweepstakes

Nick Shook of the NFL Media Group said in a column that the Jets “could come calling” Washington to strike a deal.

“New York’s transition from the short-lived Aaron Rodgers era included the departure of Davante Adams (plus Mike Williams’ in-season trade), leaving New York a little thin at the position. The Jets added Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson in the offseason, but the corps lacks punch on paper entering a season in which Justin Fields is taking over and will be expected to produce,” Shook said.

“Fields has one trusty, big-play receiver in former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson, and while they didn’t cross paths in Columbus, why not add another former Buckeye in McLaurin? The veteran would immediately give Fields another high-level teammate to target plenty in this new-look offense and raise the Jets’ ceiling. And with Fields on a two-year deal, it would be worth adding a receiver approaching 30 in order to produce instant results,” Shook added.

CBS Sports Names Jets a Top Landing Spot for McLaurin

The Jets were a popular team mentioned shortly after McLaurin’s trade request news went public.

“Like the Raiders, the Jets aren’t necessarily built to contend in 2025 as much as successfully transition to a new culture and regime. They have money to spare, however, with close to $30 million in remaining cap space, plus a relatively dire need for pass-catching weapons opposite Garrett Wilson, who’s now locked in with a deal of his own. As a bonus, new quarterback Justin Fields shares an Ohio State background with McLaurin, and Jets passing game coordinator Scott Turner was previously McLaurin’s play-caller in Washington,” Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports revealed.
