The Las Vegas Raiders had to quickly find a way to replace what Tre'von Moehrig brought to the team once they realized he wouldn't be back in 2025. So, they went and got Jeremy Chinn, who you could say is better for this defense.
Moehrig deserves every penny he got. He was a homegrown guy in Las Vegas who started rough but gradually got worse. The Carolina Panthers offered him a sum of money that they just couldn't pay if they wanted to address every need at a good level. They signed Chinn, who helped the Washington Commanders make the NFC Championship last season. And Chinn may be better for what Pete Carroll wants to do, based on what we know from his time coaching the Seattle Seahawks.
So, there was a wildcard ability that factored into the Raiders wanting him so bad. There's something that Chinn does that made him a coveted free agent, and it makes all the sense in the world with Patrick Graham, too.
Raiders' Jeremy Chinn is a true wildcard, in a good way
There is a reason why Moehrig worked so well for the Raiders. He could do whatever the Raiders needed of him. Now, Vegas is getting that from Chinn, and some, all at a cheaper option. And, the size is better.
"I would say probably just my skill set, and I mean just being able to process a lot of different things throughout the defense, being able to play close to the line scrimmage and also being able to play deep and kind of understand what the defense is supposed to look like in different spots," Chinn told reporters regarding his versatility. "I mean personally, I love doing it. Being able to just present a different threat from lining up in different areas, it keeps me and the defense unpredictable."
The only thing I would say that Moehrig does better than Chinn that is extremely noticeable, is playing center fielder in coverage. Now, it's a weakness for both, but Moehrig is considerably better than Chinn in that aspect. But everything else, Chinn is better, which makes him a true wild card.
And, he's cheap. The Raiders got him on a two-year deal worth around $16 million, which comes out at $8 million a year. Moehrig is making more than Chinn's entire contract, on one year alone with the Panthers.
