The Edmonton Oilers are going to be trading for a defenceman this season, and NHL insider David Pagnotta has connected the team to Mario Ferraro and Cody Ceci of the San Jose Sharks.
Insiders have been vocal about the Oilers desire to add another blueliner, with most recent reports suggesting they'll be casting a wide net of players to add.
According to a new update from David Pagnotta at the Fourth Period, the Oilers are one of the top five suitors to pick up the two pending free agent defenders in trade.
"Several teams are looking to bolster their blueline and add a defenceman this season, including the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers, and could approach the Sharks about either Ceci or Ferraro."- David Pagnotta
Ferraro is a 26 year old left shot defenceman in the final year of his contract that pays him $3.25M.
The Sharks drafted Ferraro in the second round in 2017, and his career began promising, but Ferraro's game has declined after years on the rebuilder team.
He's now on pace to score only 13 points this season, and has a horrific -88 in his last three seasons combined. Analytics don't favour Ferraro's game either.
The other option mentioned, Oilers fans know extremely well. Cody Ceci played in Edmonton for three seasons, and struggled massively in second pairing minutes with Darnell Nurse.
As a veteran right shot defenceman who has experience with the team, it's easy for insiders to link the Oilers to Ceci - but there would be a major uproar from fans against this move. The Oilers can set their goals much higher than a reunion with Ceci.
Hopefully Oilers management and scouts can identify a defender that will actually put the team over the top in the playoffs, giving them a much more balanced team heading into a criticism run for the Stanley Cup.
