Shortly after the Boston Celtics won their 18th championship in franchise history, a bombshell was dropped on the fanbase. Wyc Grousbeck, who has been the front-facing owner of the Celtics since 2002, revealed that he and his family would be selling the team.
Since then, updates on the sale of the team have been relatively quiet. A few tidbits have come out here and there, but for the most part, it’s been radio silence regarding the sale of the Celtics. However, things seem to be moving along more now than they were through the first few months of the season.
There could be some action sometime soon.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, the Grousbeck family will start receiving bids for the Celtics on January 23, and they have already begun to see some serious interest.
“The Celtics’ ownership group will receive the first round of bids from prospective buyers on Jan. 23, according to a Tuesday letter from the Grousbeck family to the rest of the Boston Basketball Partners and Boston Championship Basketball stakeholders that was obtained by the Globe,” Himmelsbach wrote.
“The letter states that the investment banks that were retained to manage the sale have been engaging with prospective buyers for several months, and that the Grousbecks are “pleased with the broad level of interest that has emerged.” According to the letter, the group is targeting a “first close” this spring.”
So, while there hasn’t been much information about the sale out there, fans now have a date to connect to the sale. A couple of dates, in fact.
First, as offers begin to come in starting on January 23, it seems inevitable that rumors and rumblings will soon follow. Grousbeck and company will undoubtedly try to keep things under wraps, but small pieces of information leaking seems unavoidable.
In addition to that, while it’s not an exact date, fans have also learned that the Celtics hope to have a “first close” of a deal by the springer. That means as the Celtics are fighting for Banner 19 in the NBA Playoffs, the news of the sale of the team will probably be coming out.
There haven’t been any indicators as to who potential purchasers could be for the Celtics, though varying speculation has been thrown around.
For now, all Celtics fans can do is sit back and wait, but the new information is certainly useful for generating a potential timeframe for the sale.
