“If He Reaches The Market”: New York Giants Suggested To Make Stunning Move This Offseason

It is not a secret that the New York Giants need to fix its quarterback room this offseason. The question will be which direction they want to head in.

They could draft somebody third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, they could sign someone in free agency, or make a trade for somebody. The New York Giants finished with a 3-14 overall record. General Manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will be on the hot seat entering this season.

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan Thinks That the New York Giants Should Sign Quarterback Justin Fields In Free Agency This Offseason

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, who covers the New York Giants, wrote a 10-step plan this offseason for what they should do. Third on his list, he mentioned that they should sign quarterback Justin Fields as a bridge quarterback. Duggan said:

“The Steelers could derail this plan before it gets out of the starting block because there have been reports they want to re-sign Fields. But if he reaches the market, he’d be a logical target for the Giants in their current state.

Let’s work backward from a process of elimination to show how I landed on Fields. The Giants absolutely should avoid making a splash signing of Sam Darnold, who could be looking at a contract worth $40 million annually. The Giants are still digging out from the wreckage of overpaying a quarterback based on a limited sample size of success.

Darnold is a better quarterback than Daniel Jones, but it’s hard to envision Darnold’s success in ideal circumstances with the Vikings last season translating to the Giants. The Giants aren’t in a position to gamble more than $100 million to test that theory.

The Giants shouldn’t trade for a veteran quarterback despite the persistent buzz about acquiring the Rams’ Matthew Stafford. Setting aside the hangups of a trade from the perspectives of the Rams and Stafford, the Giants shouldn’t be looking for a quick fix with a 37-year-old quarterback.”

It appears as if the Pittsburgh Steelers may not bring back Justin Fields or Russell Wilson next season. Fields last season completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed for 289 yards on 62 carries and five touchdowns, along with averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

He is 25 years old. If Justin Fields does not return to Pittsburgh next year, this would be the third team for him in three years. He left the Chicago Bears after the 2023 season. Also, signing Fields would be smarter for the New York Giants rather than trading for Matthew Stafford from the Los Angeles Rams.

Other Options

The good news for the New York Giants is that they will get better from having Daniel Jones, Tim Boyle, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito in the quarterback room for next season. Signing Justin Fields would be better off the bat, but there are other options for them.

Sam Darnold and Jameis Winston could be some other free-agent options for the Giants this offseason. Also, they could make a surprising move in the NFL Draft if they don’t select Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, or Jaxson Dart.
