Browns Roster: Ranking the Top 5 positional roles that NFL free agency, draft need to fill

Opinions have swayed on the overall talent that remains in the Cleveland Browns. After an embarrassing 3-14 finish to the season, the debate rages in the comment section of this site as to the level of changes that need to be made to the roster.

It’s becoming clear that the offense will likely be returning to a version rooted in running the ball from under center and implementing heavy play-action passing. The offense will inevitably be the focal point and I’d argue that a retooling is needed rather than a complete overhaul.

The following are the top five positional roles that GM Andrew Berry must prioritize in the offseason:

5. Physical starting slot receiver

David Bell should get an opportunity at this role if he’s healthy. The team should also add someone for this role to compete and or split time. Luther Burden would be an ideal player for this role in the draft if the team trades out of the number two pick.

4. Blocking / Possession receiving tight end

This role should be prepared to play a minimum of 40% of snaps next season. The pro scouting department should be pouring over rosters for someone on a rookie deal who hasn’t gotten the deserved opportunity due to being buried on a depth chart.

3. Dynamic starting running back

At this point, it’s tough to know if Nick Chubb can be this again. Unfortunately, it may be time to draft his replacement and bring in a cheap veteran to compete.

2. Rookie swing tackle who can start soon

While this tackle draft isn’t as good as last year’s, there are some intriguing ones that should be available in the second round. They must grab one who can be a future long-term starter and be ready right away in the event of an injury to either Dawand Jones or Jack Conklin.

1. Starting quarterback

Of course, the QB position will be the most important one to solve. It’s vital to be aggressive but not desperate this time around.

They should explore all options to find one with the physical traits that Kevin Stefanski can elevate in a similar way that the Minnesota Vikings have done with Sam Darnold.
