How does Josh Allen surpass Patrick Mahomes as league's No. 1 QB?

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen won 2024 league MVP but still isn't viewed as the best player at his position.

In a survey released Monday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported league executives, scouts and coaches ranked Allen the league's No. 2 QB, behind Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion.

So, how does Allen overtake Mahomes as the NFL's top passer?

"He's done everything," an NFC personnel executive said of Allen, per Fowler. "He's answered every test. He makes less mistakes and takes care of the ball. Only thing left to do is win it all."

The 29-year-old QB would agree.

"I don't play too much into [winning MVP]," Allen told Sports Illustrated's Liam McKeone in June. "You know, it's such a great honor, and I do appreciate being honored for my work. But at the same time, I still didn't win a Super Bowl ring and that is the only goal. It's the only focus I've ever had going into this league."

Allen has a 7-6 record in the playoffs and has yet to reach a Super Bowl. Four of these postseason losses have come against the Chiefs. This includes last season's AFC Championship Game, where Allen posted a stellar 71.1 QBR, but the Bills still fell 32-29 in Kansas City.

As of Monday, ESPN's Football Power Index gives the Bills the third-best chance (9.6 percent) to win Super Bowl LX, behind the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Bills still have questions at wide receiver. WR Khalil Shakir led the team in receiving yards last season, with just 821 in 15 regular-season games. Despite that, Buffalo waited until the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft to select a WR, West Virginia/Maryland product Kaden Prather.

The Bills signed WR Elijah Moore to a one-year deal in free agency, but the fifth-year veteran has never finished with more than 640 receiving yards in the regular season.

Allen must elevate his receiving corps to help capture Buffalo's first Lombardi Trophy. If he does, perhaps he'll be ranked No. 1 in the 2026 survey.
