We’re not sure how much longer DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba will stay together, but in the eyes of one former Seattle Seahawks running back turned analyst, this is the best wide receiver trio in the NFL.
On NFL Total Access, Robert Turbin went to bat for his former team.
“What’s wrong with y’all? It’s clearly the Seattle Seahawks,” Turbin said. “I’m going home to the place where I belong—a little Daughtry lyric for you.”
“First of all, we already know DK [Metcalf], it’s no secret. Three out of the last four seasons over 1,000 yards receiving. Tyler Lockett over 1,000 yards four out of the last five [seasons]. Two of those seasons they both had 1,000 yards together.
“Then we get to last year’s rookie, Jaxon Smith-Njigba,” Turbin continued. “At the start of the season they couldn’t get him going. Didn’t even know how to get him the ball first. They were throwing swing screens to him, trying to get him the ball in the fly sweeps and they finally decided ‘Hey, let him play wide receiver.’ He goes on to have 63 catches for over 650 yards, that’s almost double the catches Odell Beckham had last season. I love Odell, but he hasn’t had 600 yards receiving since 2019.
“The best wide receiver trio in football right now? The Seattle Seahawks.”
JSN actually had 628 yards and not over 650, but who am I to disagree with Turbo? That might be the first time I’ve ever heard Daughtry referenced in any NFL analysis.
Obviously the other comparison point was the Miami Dolphins, who just signed OBJ but already have the impossibly speedy duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Since we’re specifically talking about wide receivers and not receiving tight ends like Travis Kelce, perhaps there’s an argument to be made! The Houston Texans may take the top spot with Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell. Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and Jauan Jennings are another trio in the mix, but we don’t know if the San Francisco 49ers will end up dealing one of Aiyuk or Samuel before the season starts. If Keenan Allen hasn’t aged 20 years and Rome Odunze is as good as advertised, those two coupled with DJ Moore could make got a great trio in Chicago.
Individually it’s hard (read: impossible) to make a case for any of Metcalf, Lockett, or JSN to be a top-5 wide receiver, but in terms of depth and skillset this is as good a trio as any of the others.
