The New York Giants are at the beginning of an offseason that will shape the franchise for at least the next several years. What will the front office do at quarterback?
According to general manager Joe Schoen, they will take a “big swing” this offseason. Their first one missed — Matthew Stafford decided to stay with the Los Angeles Rams — but they have other opportunities to improve the position, whether through free agency, a trade or the draft. With the No. 3 pick, the Giants are not afforded the luxury of picking whomever they want with zero risk, however, making a trade up to No. 1 a likely scenario.
But what would a trade cost with the Tennessee Titans, who hold that pick and have expressed an openness to moving it? From SNY on Sunday:
The return compensation won’t be egregious, a slight reward for the Giants only dropping to three following their Week 17 win over the Colts. An exchange of first-round picks and two threes is likely enough to get it done, according to one general manager (unaffiliated with the Titans and Giants). The Giants might need to part with a second- and third-round pick if Tennessee can create a bidding war.
Schoen might be able to hit a home run if this swing is for Cam Ward, the Miami quarterback, whom NJ Advance Media learned at the NFL Combine ranks above Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders on nearly every team’s draft board.
When asked about the gap between the two top QBs, one person with knowledge of the draft told NJ Advance Media Ward was “by far the best quarterback in the draft — by far,” they emphasized.
Ward threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. He completed 67.2% of his passes.
Sanders recorded 4,134 passing yards with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 74% of his throws.
